Welcome home. 🌹🤍
🤫 The World Rarely Becomes Quiet on Its Own
There was a time when silence happened naturally.
The day ended.
The lights went down.
The telephone stopped ringing.
The world became still.
Today, silence often has to be chosen.
There is always something waiting for our attention.
A notification. 🔔
A message.
A headline.
A video.
Someone else’s opinion.
Someone else’s urgency.
Someone else’s life unfolding on a screen.
Information can be useful. Connection can be beautiful. Technology can open doors that previous generations could never have imagined.
But even useful things can become noise when there is no space between them. 🤍
Perhaps the question is not whether the world has become too loud.
Perhaps the deeper question is:
Have we left enough quiet within ourselves to recognize which voices actually belong there? 🌿
🌿 Silence Is More Than the Absence of Sound
Silence is not simply turning everything off.
There can be complete quiet in a room while the mind continues racing.
Replaying yesterday.
Anticipating tomorrow.
Rehearsing conversations.
Creating arguments that have not happened.
Remembering things we wish had happened differently.
Trying to solve everything at once.
True silence can become something deeper.
It is the gradual quieting of everything competing for our attention long enough for us to notice what remains. 🤫✨
Without another person telling us how to feel.
Without an algorithm deciding what we should see next.
Without a notification telling us where to look.
Without immediately reaching for something to fill the space.
Just ourselves.
Our breath.
Our thoughts.
Our feelings.
Our bodies.
And God. 🤍🙏🏽
🌬️ When Silence Feels Uncomfortable
Silence is not always immediately peaceful.
Sometimes the first thing we hear when the outside world grows quiet is everything that has been waiting underneath it.
A feeling we have been avoiding.
A thought we have repeatedly interrupted.
A question we have not wanted to answer.
A sensation in the body we have been too busy to notice.
Restlessness.
Grief.
Anger.
Relief.
Longing.
Fatigue.
Even joy. 🌿
This does not mean silence is failing.
It may mean silence is revealing.
When there is constant stimulation, distraction can become remarkably easy. We can move from one thing to another without ever remaining still long enough to ask:
What am I actually feeling?
And perhaps even more importantly:
What is underneath that feeling? 🤍
🧘🏽 Meditation Does Not Always Have to Make Us Calm
Meditation is often introduced as a way to relax.
And sometimes that is exactly what we need. 🌬️
But meditation can also become a way of listening.
Rather than immediately trying to stop a thought, we can become curious about it.
Where did that thought come from?
What emotion seems connected to it?
What happens in the body when it appears?
Does the chest tighten?
Does the jaw tense?
Does the stomach contract?
Does the breath become shallow?
Does the body soften when something truthful is finally acknowledged? 🌿
The goal does not have to be analyzing every sensation or forcing ourselves into painful memories.
Sometimes it is simply noticing without immediately running away.
The body often communicates before language catches up.
Silence gives us room to listen. 🤍
🌿 Silence and the Nervous System
The human nervous system is continually receiving information from the environment.
Sounds.
Movement.
Screens.
Conversations.
Responsibilities.
Warnings.
Requests.
Expectations.
Even when we are sitting still, our attention can be moving constantly.
Quiet moments can offer a different kind of experience.
Fewer demands.
Fewer interruptions.
Less information to process.
A chance to breathe without immediately preparing for the next thing. 🌬️
Silence does not magically erase stress or trauma.
But creating intentional periods with less stimulation can give us an opportunity to notice our internal state and respond more consciously rather than moving automatically from one demand to another.
Sometimes the nervous system does not need another technique.
Sometimes it needs fewer things competing for it. 🤫🤍
🔔 What Happens When Nothing Is Calling Us?
Notifications have quietly changed our relationship with attention.
A sound happens.
We look.
A vibration happens.
We reach.
A number appears beside an icon.
Something inside us wants to clear it.
Respond.
Check.
Know.
Return. 📱
None of this makes technology inherently harmful.
The question is whether we are still choosing the relationship.
There is an enormous difference between:
I am going to check this now.
and
Something summoned me, so I responded.
That difference is intentionality. 🎯
Removing unnecessary interruptions—even temporarily—can reveal just how frequently our attention has been leaving the moment without our conscious permission.
And once we notice that, we are given a choice.
We can still use the tools.
We simply stop allowing every tool to use us. 🤍✨
🌎 Quiet Returns Us to the Human Rhythm
Nature contains sound, but it also contains space.
Wind moves and then settles.
Rain falls and then stops.
A birdsong arrives between stretches of quiet.
Night follows day. 🌙
Winter follows growth.
Even the earth seems to understand rhythm.
Movement.
Rest.
Sound.
Silence.
Human beings are not machines designed for uninterrupted input.
We need moments when nothing is asking us to perform.
Nothing is asking us to answer.
Nothing is asking us to consume.
Nothing is asking us to react. 🌿
Sometimes silence allows us to feel human again simply because, for a moment, we are permitted to be rather than constantly respond.
📖 The Quiet Voice
Scripture offers a beautiful image of God not arriving through the loudest forces surrounding Elijah.
There was wind.
There was an earthquake.
There was fire.
And afterward came what Scripture describes as a gentle whisper. 📖🤍
“And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”
—1 Kings 19:12
There is something worth sitting with in that image.
Not everything important arrives loudly.
Not every answer announces itself.
Not every spiritual realization comes through intensity.
Sometimes what we have been asking for becomes easier to recognize only after everything else becomes quiet. 🙏🏽✨
Perhaps silence is not the absence of God.
Perhaps sometimes it is where we finally become still enough to listen.
🤍 Silence Is Not Isolation
Silence does not require rejecting people.
It does not mean abandoning community.
It does not require disappearing from the world.
And it certainly does not mean that communication, technology, or social connection are somehow wrong.
Silence is about relationship.
Our relationship with information.
Our relationship with attention.
Our relationship with other people’s voices.
Our relationship with our own thoughts.
Our relationship with God. 🌿
Healthy connection becomes easier to recognize when we also know how to exist without constant connection.
We can have relationships with technology, social media, news, entertainment, and other people without allowing those relationships to occupy every available space within us.
That may be one of the quieter forms of self-mastery:
Being able to engage without surrendering ourselves to what we engage with. 🤍
💭 A Moment of Reflection
🤫 When was the last time you experienced quiet without immediately reaching for something to fill it?
🌿 What tends to become louder inside you when the outside world becomes quiet?
🔔 How much of your attention is consciously given—and how much is automatically taken?
There are no right answers.
Only opportunities to notice. 🤍✨
🌱 This Week’s Practice: Create a Pocket of Silence
Choose one small period each day.
It does not have to be an hour.
Start with ten minutes.
No social media.
No television.
No podcast.
No music.
No notifications.
No need to accomplish anything. 🤫
Simply sit somewhere comfortable.
Breathe naturally. 🌬️
Notice what appears.
If a thought comes, you do not have to chase it.
If an emotion appears, you do not have to solve it.
If discomfort arrives, approach it gently rather than immediately labeling it as wrong.
You might quietly ask:
What am I noticing?
What am I feeling?
Where do I feel it in my body?
What might need my attention?
And then listen.
If prayer feels natural, allow God into that space. 🙏🏽
No performance.
No perfect meditation.
Just ten minutes of becoming available to yourself again. 🌿🤍
✨ Going Forward
Silence does not give us every answer.
Sometimes it gives us something more valuable.
Space.
Space between the thought and the reaction.
Space between the notification and the response.
Space between what the world says and what we know to be true.
Space between fear and discernment.
Space where God can be heard without competing with everything else. 🤍✨
Perhaps self-mastery is not about learning to control every thought.
Perhaps it is about becoming quiet enough to decide which thoughts deserve our attention.
Perhaps peace is not created by eliminating every sound around us.
Perhaps it begins when we stop giving every sound permission to enter us.
The world will continue speaking.
Technology will continue advancing.
Information will continue arriving.
But we can learn to choose when we listen.
We can decide when we respond.
And we can preserve places within ourselves where the outside world does not have unlimited access. 🌿
May we discover that silence is not empty.
May we become curious about what it reveals.
May we learn to sit with ourselves without immediately escaping ourselves.
And somewhere between the breath, the quiet, and the space that remains…
May we hear what has been waiting patiently within us all along. 🤫🤍✨
🌹🤍 Thank You for Walking With Me
Thank you for taking another step along The Way Home.
After learning to breathe… 🌬️
After learning to flow… 🌊
After remembering where we stand… 🌎
We now begin learning how to listen. 🤫
Not only to the world around us.
But to the quieter wisdom within us—and to the God who does not always need to shout to make His presence known. 🤍🙏🏽
Welcome home. 🌹🤍
🎯 Looking Ahead
Silence creates space.
But what we do with that space matters.
Once the noise becomes quieter, another question begins to emerge:
How do we want to live when we are no longer moving entirely on autopilot?
